"Onward and Upward , Gallerie Quynh , Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Galerie Quynh has organized an ambitious exhibition spanning both its De Tham and Dong Khoi galleries. Titled Onward and Upward, the show features work by 17 artists who continue to define and shape the contemporary art landscape in Vietnam. Whether realized through painterly abstraction, whimsical drawing, trompe l’oeil sculpture, digitally woven photography or kitsch motorbike decal collage, the works in this exhibition are equally as diverse thematically. Historical memory and loss, cultural difference, urban space, nature and human, identity, power and rebellion are among the varied themes in the show.

The participating artists are Thierry Bernard-Gotteland, Tiffany Chung, Nadege David, Thien Do, Ha Manh Thang, Hoang Duong Cam, Sandrine Llouquet, Nguyen Manh Hung, Nguyen Phuong Linh, Trong Gia Nguyen, Nguyen Thanh Truc, Tuan Andrew Nguyen, Phan Quang, The Propeller Group, Tran Van Thao, Truc-Anh and Lien Truong. Please contact the gallery for detailed information on the individual artists and exhibited works.

The opening reception will be held at both galleries on Friday, the 28th of March from 6 to 9pm. Both gallery spaces will be open to the public for the entire evening.

The gallery is pleased to be launching three new publications this month featuring work by three of Vietnam’s most acclaimed artists: One Planet by Nguyen Manh Hung; Heaven is a Place by Ha Manh Thang; and an archaeology project for future remembrance by Tiffany Chung.

The gallery is also thrilled to announce that it will launch a non-profit initiative in April on the grounds of the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Art Museum. Called Sao La, the project space’s mission is two-fold: to make contemporary art accessible to the general Vietnamese public through educational programs and to nurture Vietnam’s growing arts community. Sao La will serve not only as a platform for exhibitions, film/video screenings, workshops and lectures but also as an informal space for young Vietnamese artists to experiment, challenge and develop their creative practices. Under the aegis of Galerie Quynh with programming initiated by two young dynamic Saigon-based artists, Tung Mai and Nguyen Kim To Lan, Sao La will evolve in response to the needs of the local community. Please stay tuned for program information.

Found only in the Annamite mountain range of Vietnam and Laos, Sao La is the name of one of the world’s rarest mammals. ‘Sao’ on its own can signify ‘star’ or pose the questions ‘how?’ ‘what?’ or ‘why’? ‘La’ suggests a shriek, call or shout.
